I watched into the wild for the first time this morning.
To me, it seemed like a cautionary tale. First off, Alex did a brave thing and changed his life, but in his search for self and happiness he thought he had to flee people and human relationships. However, in the movie he is happiest when he connects with other people that care about him and understand his travels. In the end he realizes this but it is too late. He lets his idealism get away with him and ended up marooned in Alaska with no map, compass or basic hunting and foraging skills. The poor, lost kid starved to death.

I think he learned the hard way. Any smuck can get themselves lost, but not everyone can find their way home. I sometimes think that the quest for a real home and the quest for life’s meaning are entwined. Home is not necessarily a place.

I sympathize with many of Alex’s sentiments and can see the allure of running away. Yet, I think that real contentment is found when you do things that give you a meaning beyond yourself and when you find people who both love and understand you, friends who you have a kinship with.

Lessons? You find yourself, you build a tribe of your own people, whoever they may be, and when adventuring you always bring a F**** map and compass.

There’s a trend in paleoart known as “shrink-wrapping”, where dinosaurs and other beasties are drawn as little more than the barest amount of flesh over a skeleton, as if the distant past was entirely populated by bizarrely anorexic wildlife. It was very prevalent in the 90s, although thankfully less so these days.

A recently-released book, All Yesterdays, features some wonderful speculative paleoart, showcasing a few more fanciful and fun depictions of prehistoric life as a reminder that we might still be just as wrong about some of these animals as were the lumbering swamp-monster dinosaurs of the 1950s. It also has a section based around “reconstructing” a few animals of today as they might be seen by a non-human paleontologist in the far future.

And I’ve done something similar here. This is a suitably shrink-wrapped and scalified version of a modern critter — our hypothetical future-scientist only had a skeleton to work from, and no soft-tissue evidence at all for this particular group of animals.

So, let’s have a little interactivity here: what is this thing?

Tonight sucks.

The weight of it all is really hitting me. I have been so, so lucky to have the friends I do in college. They have all been great and have helped me though a lot of crap even if they didn’t know it at the time.

I am going to miss Jen’s awesome nerd parties, the girls in the lab, my classmates, repeat professors, and especially living with S, the best roommate ever.

I feel so fortunate to have gotten to know all of these smart, interesting and dynamic people.
I am going to miss having you all next door, in the next room, or just down the street.
